The axe-wielding Somali

As most of you know or to some degree heard about, the drawer behind the Muhammad (pbuh) cartoons, Kurt Westergaard, was on the first of January attacked by a 28-year-old Somali Muslim. Equipped with an axe, he managed to break in to the  house of the 74-year-old Dane. The Dane managed to get himself inside a safe room where he alerted the authorities. He was with his grandchild at the time, but only managed to get himself in the room and this is what he had to say about leaving the child:

“I feared for my grandchild,” he told Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper that had commissioned the cartoon. “But she did great. I knew that he wouldn’t do anything to her.” He went on: “It was close, really close. But we did it.”

The Somali man tried to break in to the safe room, but wasn’t able to do so and left the scene.

“The attacker, who was also carrying a knife, shouted, “I’ll be back”, before going outside to confront police. He smashed a police car window with the axe and was shot in the hand and a knee when he threw the axe at an officer. [...]“

The Somali man survived his woundings and is now being charged with attempted murder and terrorism.

There’s no doubt that the cartoons were unnecessary, provocative and using freedom of speech as a shield, but was this Somali man right or wrong in what he did and why?

I’d like to hear what you guys think of this.

  1. Quoting something is fine, but we are interested in your opinion too, there wasn’t much of it. This blog post is almost a republishment of what Jyllands-Posten and others had to say, they all regurgitate the same blocks which is the problem with media today, now how is Qarxis different then them in this light?

Getting back to the topic, Kurt Westergaard did not just do drawings but insulted prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by portraying him offensively, this is wrong of cause. What this young Somali guy has done is also wrong, SIMPLE. Kurt should not insult someone people hold dear just because he can, his attacker should not attack the old man just because he can, they are both freedom abusers.

  2. Thanks for adding the image. I kind of forgot that.

I was purposely trying to be objective. I didn’t want to add my own opinion. The goal of my blog was to start a debate here and hear what peoples thoughts on this was and I found adding my opinion in the blog kind of purpose defeating, when I wanted to be objective. My opinion will obviously also be displayed here. I do however understand where you’re coming from when it comes to blogs – more than you think in fact.

  4. There has been some numerous of questions that has been avoided or not given enough attention. Kurt Westergaard is normally being watch by PET (Danish Security and Intelligence Service) and under 24/7 surveillance. He’s been living like this pretty much since the demonstrations escalated. The Danish government fund millions a year to keep him safe. So it’s very odd that anyone unnoticed could get to the house of Kurt Westergaard. Especially, when that someone was already being watched by PET.

So the questions are; where was PET? How did the intruder make it so far without PET noticing? How can someone who was already being watched by PET get so close? Why would anyone attack a house you know is being constantly watched with an axe and a knife? It just doesn’t add up and no one really dares to ask these questions and whenever they’re asked they’re undermined a lot.
Say the Somali guy actually did do it. Was he right in doing so? No, I don’t believe killing this old man is the right thing to do. This is what he said last year “At my age you are not so much afraid any more”, while at the same time he has been constantly portraying himself as someone who really cares about freedom of speech and democratic values. As if it was something he was ready to defend his life with.
So what does Kurt Westergaard do when he gets attacked while he’s with his five-year-old granddaughter? He legs it while looking out for the only thing that matters, his own life. Who on earth would do that? Leaving your granddaughter with someone who could possibly hurt her? And is someone like this who’s a hypocrite even worth a second look?

Another thing which I don’t believe most people know. The Somali guy has been on few occasions pressured by PET. They wanted him to work for them, so they could gain information from different mosques. They weren’t asking, they were requesting it. I don’t want speculate too much (more that I’ve already done that’s :P ), but I don’t think it’s hard to imagine what kind of circumstances these things happen under. And I don’t believe it’s wrong to conclude that this Somali guy was under a lot of pressure, but that does not explain why he attacked Kurt Westergaard.
I believe that he in fact never did it. This was all staged. You would then ask why? The answer is simple or at least my answer. If the population are kept under the fear of Islam and terrorism, the government can justify going in to Iraq and Afghanistan while the majority will support them. And this is not the first time we’ve seen this. I think the most obvious example is what happened 9/11 which was an inside job, but nevertheless was the fuel needed to start 2 wars. Dare I also mention what Hitler did with the Jews? Give the population a common target they’ll hate and you’ll be surprised to see what they will accept and do.

Let’s be clear on this though, the things I’ve mentioned here are my own personal views of what happened. I can easily be wrong and feel free to correct me if I’m.

  5. Thank you for your very valuable reply, waaw. Something is definitely fishy about the official story, how can a young man with an axe fail to hit an old man? which grandfather would run away from his granddaughter, it makes no sense.

It definitely does not add up and I don’t think that we will ever find out the truth, this is sadly the reality of the world today.

All in all this young man should not have attacked the old man, the security might have let him through so they could later create a story about how crazy muslims are but ultimately the young guy made the move, he is now paying for it.

    • The question is though, did he even attack the old man?

      15th Jan 2010 02:37 pm
  6. Yep, that’s the million dollar question. Anyway I don’t want to worry too much about this old fart, he is a wimp for running away from his granddaughter in danger.

  7. Ayaanle,

You, my son, ask some very relevant questions, and I shall hand you a nice candy.

On a serious note, the PET has failed in protecting this cartoonist dude and should be criticized for its failure. Something quite tragic could have happened and social unrest would have been caused as a result which would have directly threatened the lives of Somalis and Muslims living in Denmark. But to say that the PET was involved or that the whole thing was engineered to put Muslims/Somalis in a bad light, is simply unfounded and a trivialization of the problem at hand. The Somali youth in Europe are quite militant and hold some very divisive and dangerous views. There are a lot of reasons for this. But I won’t digress here. Instead, let’s get to the heart of the issue here.

The Cartoonist was obviously callous when he made those provocative cartoons, and people are justified in being outraged. BUT, one can’t take the law into their hands and run into other peoples’ houses wielding axes and other medieval tools of war to express this outrages and this is precisely what it boils down to. The cartoonist might have agitated Muslims and others when he made those cartoons, but he deserves our sympathizes simply because of he is the victim here ( Freedom of Speech- HELLO!)

Apparently, he made some cartoons of the Prophet SCW and claimed that Islam is a dangerous religion/cult/violent and etc. It is utterly stupid to prove him RIGHT by attacking him in his own home.

Somali youth need to be less militant and instead show the side of their story without resorting to violence to express their views. If someone calls you dangerous, you shouldn’t reply them by attacking them. This whole episode is hilarious and shows what is precisely wrong with Islam today. Muslims have developed a gang mentality and almost always end up shooting themselves in the foot with their silly shenanigans

  8. Thanks for your comment Mr. RecoveringRomantics, but Ayaanle never said that the axe-wielding Somali guy was right at any point, we all agreed on how very wrong he was, so no point giving us a lecture into what is right or wrong.

All Ayaanle said was that the story we were told did not add up and came with some observations that he had made which were interesting.

“The Somali youth in Europe are quite militant and hold some very divisive and dangerous views.”

Please tell me that you have been here in Europe and seen these militant Somali youth that you are talking about? I just have the feeling that you just saying this because the media said it.

  9. Siiqe,

I am not putting any words in Ayaanle’s mouth. This is a direct quote from his previous comment:

“It just doesn’t add up and no one really dares to ask these questions and whenever they’re asked they’re undermined a lot.”

Of course, he is questioning the mainstream view as to what happened and he is insinuating that the attacker might have been innocent or framed. So, you shouldn’t attack me but instead, it would do us all a favor if you read the person you defend before throwing silly balloons at me.

With regards to your question as to why I say the Somali Youth in Europe are militant and hold dangerous views, well, to be brutally honest with you, from my own experience with dealing with these lost sperms, I have realized that they are more likely to wave the Philshytinian flag and burn the Somali Flag. Some of the ones I have run across, don’t even believe the whole idea of Somalia and think that our country is an open field open to any social reject and criminal as long as he claims to be a Muslim. They also think Osama’s Black Flag is cuter than the Somali flag. Crazy kids, I tell you.

  10. Hahahahaha ok fair enough.

“it would do us all a favor if you read the person you defend before throwing silly balloons at me.”

I don’t appreciate you saying this at all, because I have never defended him and you are almost insulting me, but what ever you say man.

  19. Well…..At the end of the day,the boy had no business in the old mans house. The law applies to everyone. I can’t imagine what the hell he was thinking. Atleast alhamdullilah no one got physcally hurt. The courts are now going to deal with him. What a waste of a life……

    18th Jan 2010 03:38 pm
  20. I really don’t care about this man (The somali dude, and the Danish dude), and I don’t see any point of wasting more space on them.

    19th Jan 2010 10:53 am
  21. True that, Noor. You, my friend, shouldn’t be wasting space discussing about this case. Instead, you should be wasting sperms and making million army baby!

    19th Jan 2010 11:00 am
  22. What I don’t understand is who would leave his grandchild (or any other family member for that matter) with someone with an axe bearing man.. anyway I always knew somalis in Denmark missed a little piece in their brain, that makes you think like a normal human being. Fire should not be fought with fire!
